Largemouth Bass are Chewing in the Glades

Capt. Alan Sherman
April 27, 2015
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

March and April have been loaded with charters and plenty of happy clients for me and Get Em Sportfishing Charters. There has been little time to write a fishing report and even now I only have a few minutes to write before I am back on the water. Unfortunately many of the clients I have fished recently are now back in their home towns and my business will slow down a bit. Bad for me but good for you because that means there is plenty of open dates and some great fishing for you to take advantage of at any of the many locations that I fish.

In the past two months my clients have caught plenty of snook, fought small and large tarpon, caught and released large jack crevalles, snappers, large sea trout, tripletail, sharks and more. I have fished North Bay, South Bay, Flamingo in Everglades National Park, some offshore fishing and along the Tamiami Trail where we caught a lot of snook and a few largemouth bass. Out along Alligator Alley the bass fishing has exploded with catch numbers almost unbelievable.

Fishing in North Bay has really picked up with the return of speckled sea trout that have invaded the shallow grass flats of North Bay. Many of these sea trout are spawning and some have exceeded five pounds and 25 inches in length. Along with the sea trout there have been bonnethead sharks, barracudas, jack crevalles over 10 pounds, snappers, snook and some real battles with large tarpon on light tackle. The majority of these fish were caught using 10 pound line, Daiwa Lexa spinning reels, Key Largo rods and Cajun Thunder floats, Mustad hooks, Rapala hard plastic lures, Hookup lures and Gulp soft plastics.

Baby bonefish caught in may cast net. One of three that I released that day.

The fishing in South Bay has slowed down.

Offshore fishing has been fair with a few days being unbelievable. Unfortunately the best offshore days were when the winds were really strong keeping me inshore. When we were able to get offshore we had action from kingfish, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, barracudas, dolphins, tripletail and jacks.

Flamingo in Everglades National Park provided some of the best action with redfish, sea trout, snook, tarpon, jacks, ladyfish, snapper, tripletail, sharks and Spanish mackerel keeping my clients busy. The wildlife in the Park was special with sightings of American crocodiles, flamingoes,, rosette spoonsbills, ospreys, a bald eagle at the boat ramp, white pelicans, an alligator on the road, snakes squirming along the road and much more.

The water levels continue to drop in the canal systems of the Everglades Conservation areas. Largemouth and peacock bass, pickerel, bluegills, Oscars and lots of cichlids are competing for the same baitfish. On a recent outing in the Glades fishing for fun I had over 50 largemouth bass with close to 25 between 1 and 3.8 pounds caught on Rapala floating minnows and Trigger X soft plastics. Along with a few gars and lots of panfish the total catch for me was close to 80 fish. This kind of fishing will only get better for the next month before the water levels start to rise.

South Florida Fishing Forecast:

Spring is here and the fishing in South Florida is about to explode. With water temperatures rising sea trout and snook will start their spawning seasons. Bigger fish and bigger numbers of fish! Spanish mackerel, bluefish and kingfish are heading north for the summer. As they pass the Miami area they always provide a months' worth of action. Big jack crevalles will be chasing baitfish schools in North Bay and big tarpon will be stealing baits intended for other fish. Offshore we will see kingfish and Spanish mackerel, bonitos, sailfish, dolphins and blackfin tuna feeding right alongside each other. In Flamingo in Everglades National Park we will see the return of all of the migratory birds as they fill the park and make unbelievable sunrise pictures. Fishing for snook, redfish, sheepshead, blackdrum, snapper, sea trout, jacks ladyfish, sharks, tripletail, cobia and more will be as e exciting light tackle fishing as one could wish for. When the freshwater levels drop in the Everglades Conservation areas the largemouth bass stack up in the canal systems providing 100 fish days.
