Late May Early June Fishing Report

Capt. Gil Gutierrez
June 19, 2011
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

I have done several trips since my last report so I will try to keep it short and sweet. We did have a very good trip this past week. We caught 6 sailfish, 22#king, 26#mahi, 28#blackfin tuna, a red grouper and one tarpon estimated at 120#'s. The tarpon bite continues on in a very consistent manner. The fish have all been on the larger side. All the fish we have encountered have been in the 90-120# scale. The only bad part of this report is that the water is starting to heat up and that means the tarpon fishing may start to slow down. At that point we may have to fish some oddball hours to catch the tide at certain places. But for the time being the fish are still on the beaches, easy to get to, and very cooperative. On our worst night tarpon fishing we went 2 for 3.
The mahi fishing is still inconsistent. Some days you will be fishing on the edge and catch them other days they require runs of 15-20 miles with not much reward for all your effort. I am still fishing the edge and finding the action to be more consistent then running all over the ocean searching for a couple of mahi. The good news is some of the charter boats in the keys are reporting good catches of mahi. This could be a sign of better things to come.
The sailfish bite has been pretty decent. We have had shots at sailfish and have been catching at least 1-2 fish on every one of our trips except one. The fish have all come on the edge while kite fishing. In addition to the sailfish there have been the other cast of character to keep us busy. The false albacores have been ferocious. These fun and hard fighting fish can bend all six rods over at once sending everyone scrambling to keep lines separated due to the fact that they like to swim together.
The bottom bite continues delivering great tasting bottom fish. The mutton snapper bite will only get better as we head towards the full moon. We have been catching several on almost all of our charters sending home some tasty eating fish. Add in kingfish and amberjack and it really isn't that hard to put together a great day of fishing. But it is hard to catch them sitting on the couch, so let's go fishing! I do have some days open in June so give me a call and let's see what we can come up with.

Till Next Time
Best of Luck…
