March and Spring Migrations very exciting in South Florida

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
March's weather normally sparks the beginning of South Florida's fish spawning season. I say normally because this is not a normal fishing season. Typically we see large Spanish mackerel, bluefish, pompano, large sea trout, large dolphins, sailfish, groupers and a few other species attacking our baits in March. With the way our weather has been since January it is any ones guess as to what will happen this year in March.
North Biscayne Bay has produced some nice catches of assorted size sea trout. Some of these fish have been large and full of roe. Spanish mackerel and bluefish have not been thick but they have been available. We are still seeing some groupers in the bay and on occasion we have had tarpon as the one that the Farris family hooked and fought on 10 pound Suffix line and a Rapala X Rap. Each member of the family of four took turns for one hour getting the fish just to the leader before the 80 pound tarpon ran off and cut the line on a crab trap buoy. A few snook are biting and on a day after a charter I hit a spot and caught two nice snook on live pilchards. One of the snook was in the slot and went home with me for dinner.
I did make it into the ocean with my son Zach who is back in town from working in Australia for the past 60 days. He caught a large lionfish over a deep wreck and a big tilefish in 650 feet of water. Both fish were filleted and made a great dinner for the family and friends. The lionfish had beautiful white meat and was delicious. I also had a chance to fish with Zach out of Holiday Park for largemouth bass and although water levels are not as low as they were two years ago they are low enough to allow us to catch over a 100 largemouth bass, panfish and a pickerel on Trigger X soft plastics. And Rapala X Raps.
Fishing in Flamingo continues to be steady but each angler has had to be patient and take advantage of each good strike to make it a successful day.
All of these fish were caught using Key Largo spinning rods, Daiwa Advantage spinning reels, Okuma spinning reels, Shimano spinning reels and Stren and P-Line lines.
What are you waiting for? Pick up the phone and let's go catch some snook!
