March Tarpon Fly Fishing

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Although a little on the cold and windy side, tarpon fishing in March has been very good. This past week my customers fished in 25 kt winds. Tarpon fishing can be very good in these conditions as the water is stirred up and the baits are flowing through. These conditions seem to be harder on the angler than the tarpon. Especially the fly guys. Some of my toughest days are those with slick calm conditions. On calm days, sight fishing for tarpon is very exciting, however on those windy days blind casting can be very productive.

Wake Tsunehisa caught this 130 lb tarpon on his fly rod using an IGFA standard leader with a 20# tippet and 80# shock tippet. It was the last of nine tarpon hooked that day.

Larry Mely caught his tarpon on a fly rod in the southern end of Biscayne National Park on one of the slick calm days of March. A properly placed fly was the key to his success.

Jim Kearney caught this 100+ lb tarpon and after the 20 minute workout decided to fish for something smaller.

This 100+ lb tarpon that Barnes McLaurin is holding was one of three he caught on fly in 25 kt winds.
Miami Fishing Forecast:

I am looking forward to the warmer days of April and May and finishing up the second half of prime tarpon season without having to leave the dock wearing my heavy sweat shirt. Tarpon, bonefish and permit fishing will remain even more consistent with the less frequent passing of cold fronts.
Target Species:

Tarpon, bonefish, permit, shark
