Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
As the title states the fishing in May have been about as good as you can expect. A multitude of species continue to keep rods bent and people smiling. Let get right to the action.
Our most memorable catch from the past couple of weeks was a beautiful Blue Marlin. I think I was more excited than my customer! The last blue I caught was a while back while fishing with my wife. This fish did not disappoint. Once hooked the fish went ballistic jumping all over place and melting line off the reel at an alarming rate. Luckily, my customer was a good angler and did an excellent job pressuring the fish on 20 pound tackle.
In addition to this the blackfin tuna have been incredibly active in the late afternoon. We are catching our tunas primarily off the kite. But we have also caught a couple tunas on free lined herring. Just yesterday we caught 3 blackfins, 2 sailfish, 2 mutton snapper, 4 mahi-mahi, a kingfish, and an amberjack. You can expect this type of action in the month of May. The best part is you don't even have to get up early. Let's get to some of the other action. The tarpon fishing continues to be steady with rather large fish being caught on a regular basis. We have been catching all of our fish on crabs.
Mahi-Mahi have been spread out all over the ocean, We have run offshore to about 800-1000 feet of water only to find them in 150 feet of water, on the reef, while kite fishing. What has been helping us find the dolphin have been the frigate birds. One day we followed one bird for over 2 hours and that one bird put us on a bunch of fish. The mahi fishing right now if very good and should only get better as we head into summer.
The sailfish bite has been good not great. We had 3 trips where we did not catch a sailfish but ended up catching other species of fish. On the trips were we had the right conditions we have been averaging 2-3 sails per trip. This is the kind or ratio we can expect for this time of year. Bottom fishing has also been good but a very strong north current has made it a little hard to anchor and hold bottom. I will start concentrating more on bottom fishing the closer we get to the full moon in June. We have caught several mutton snapper in the past couple of trips. Right now you best bet is the blackfin tuna fishing. The fish are large, hard fighting, and excellent eating. Plan your trip late in the afternoon and you won't be sorry.
