Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
Well I'm not going to lie; it's been a rough week both literally and figuratively! The fishing in Miami could not be any better but yet heartbreak abounds, let me explain. The fishing in Miami is about as good as it gets. We have been catching and releasing (not by choice) some nice fish. I don't think I can recall a year where I have seen or heard more about yellowfin and Bluefin tuna in our waters.
Unfortunately this is where the heartbreak comes into the story. Last week we had 4 shots at yellowfin tunas in just 2 days of fishing! One of these fish was between 70-80 pounds. We got a clear look at the fish and that would be the last look we would get at him. My customer diligently fought the fish for 3 hours on 20 pound tackle. Sadly, a slight momentary lapse in concentration caused us to lose the fish. The other 2 fish chewed through the leader and the last fish broke the main line which I believe to be hit by another fish while we were fighting him.
So even though we had our shots we came up on the losing end but I will tell you one of the coolest things is to watch these tunas eat a bait off the kite. Hopefully we will get another shot. This is fishing and just like life it doesn't always go your way. Like I always say I tell you the good, the bad and the ugly and losing those fish was downright hideous and heartbreaking!
Now onto the good news, the sailfish bite is very good. We fished a 6 hour trip and ended up going 6 for 7 on sailfish in addition to some big amberjacks and a shark. If we could have gone a full day we probably would have ended up in double digits. Most of those fish were caught by a 10 and 12 year old angler so that was cool. We have been getting multiple shots on each trip so if sailfish is your species let's get out there and see what we can do. The sail fishing should remain steady for the next couple of months.
Grouper season finally opened on May 1 and we were able to cash in. Now we can legally keep all those beautiful groupers we had to throw back. Most of our groupers have been gags with some black groupers thrown in the mix. In addition to the groupers the mutton snappers have not disappointed. Customers are taking home a couple on most every trip. These are some of the best tasting fish in the ocean. Summer is not that far off and when the water heats up and the kite tackle gets put away we break out the bottom gear and it's time to get to work.
Amberjack are still chewing well but after a couple of these bruisers my customers say "No Mas" and we move on. The amberjack are still pretty consistent and will remain so as we move into summer.
The mahi-mahi are a little hit and miss right now but that will improve the deeper we get into summer. While waiting for the sailfish to bite the kingfish have been filling in the gaps. But one of the sure signs we are getting closer to summer is the arrival of the bonitos. We caught more this past week then I can remember. They are not a good eating fish but they are fun on light tackle. But mixed in with those bonitos are some good sized blackfin tunas! Fish ranging anywhere from 20-30 pounds! Now these are hard fighting and excellent eating. The best part is that you don't have to get up early to fish we can do a late afternoon trip which is one of the best times to fish for them.
Well that is it for now. These next couple of months is some of the best to fish in Florida. This is the time of year that we start to get into big kingfish, mahi-mahi, and blackfin tuna. And when you add in some sailfish you just can't go wrong!
