Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

With the first day of spring changes are already happening out on the water. Spring fishing is some of the best fishing you can experience in the state of Florida. Let's get to some of the action that we have already experienced in the past couple of weeks.
Kings, kings, kings. The kingfish bite has been great over the past several weeks, with several trip limits being reached within just an hour or two. Most of the fish have been in the 10-25 lb. range. We are catching them trolling and live baiting. I really see no letup in the king bite and actually spring is the time of year when we start to get kings in the 40-50# range. If last year is any indication of what to expect this year we should be putting some large kings on the dock shortly.
The sailfish bite continues to be o.k. We have caught some but it's really been a little slow on the sailfish bite. Most trips you may catch from 2 to 4 but there have really not been any big number days. We have caught our fair share but no really big numbers to talk about. If we caught as many free jumpers as we have seen in the last couple of days we would have some very decent numbers to post. There is a chance that the sailfish bite will improve as we move into spring. Last spring we had several days of 3-5 plus sailfish on a single trip. It seems tarpon have also been playing a little bit of a hide and go seek. Some days they have been on the beach and other days we have had to go into the bay to find them. The tarpon are there we just have to go and figure out where.
Bottom fishing continues to be very good for us. We have caught a bunch of grouper since my last report. It seems as if May 1 is never going to arrive. We have been catching blacks, gags, and red grouper. In addition to the grouper we have also caught some mutton snappers. Spring is a great time for muttons and should only get better as the year moves on. Amberjack have been giving us a good tussle on many of the deep wrecks. The fish are large and plentiful and pull like a freight train.
In addition to all this the blackfin tuna bite is also going to get started. Spring is the time when we see fish in the 20-30 lb. range with some bigger fish pushing 35 plus. If you fish you probably already know that tunas are some of the hardest fighting fish you can encounter and these are no different. Catching one of these fish on 20# tackle is a lot fun.
As you can probably tell spring time is one of my favorite times of the year to fish. There are lots of species and they seem to get bigger the further we get into spring. I almost forgot one of the best things about spring, you don't have to wake up early to go fishing. Most of my trips will start to take place from 12-8 PM. Another great reason for the late afternoon trips is that many times after 3 or 4 pm we will be the only boat out there. We literally have the whole playground to ourselves. If you want to get out there give me a call and we can discuss all the options available. As always please remember to keep our service members and first responders in your thoughts and prayers.
Until next time, Best of luck…
