Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
Out of the yard and back to fishing! I'm finally done prepping the boat for the upcoming fishing season. Bottom paint, zincs, impellers, baitwell pumps, and bilge pumps have all been replaced and I'm ready for action. I was able to get in some days of fishing before we went to the boat yard and after I got out.
For the past couple of weeks it has been "Bonito Palooza"
The bonitos are here in crazy numbers and eating almost anything that you put in front of them. When 4 rods go off at once this time of year you're pretty much guaranteed that the bonitos have found you! Although they are fun to catch they are terrible on the dinner plate and therefore we release them.
I've gotten calls from some regulars looking for mahi-mahi but to be honest they are just starting to trickle in and when you do find them there are a lot of small undersize fish. But it is starting to improve so I think in the next couple of weeks the mahi-mahi should be here in force.
Most of my summer until now has been spent on the reef. And we have had some really good trips. Sharks, jack cravelles, mutton snapper, porgies, amberjacks and kingfish have been biting pretty well. Muttons have been the most consistent. We have been catching anywhere from 3-5 muttons per trip on almost all of my trips. This time of year we also catch jack cravells that will push 20 pounds. These fish are tough fighters even on heavy tackle meant for groupers.
The king bite has been slow. We caught some but the bite has really been lacking. If you ever wanted to catch a shark this would be the time of year to do it! Shark fishing right now is not a question if you will catch one; it's a question of how many you want to catch. We caught 4 out of 7 shark bites in a 4 hour period. There are plenty of bull sharks and a couple of hammerheads mixed in.
There have been a sailfish or two caught but this is really not our "primetime" to fish for them but there are some around. If you are willing to put your time in you may be rewarded with one of these high flying acrobats. If you really looking to bend a rod some of the deeper wrecks are still holding amberjacks so that is also an option. Most of these amberjack are in the 20-40# range. There is plenty of action to be had we just need to fish for different species and use different techniques to fill the box.
