Mid- February Report

Capt. Gil Gutierrez
February 12, 2013
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well I know the calendar says it's February but it sure doesn't feel that way and yet as I type this report I am sitting here in a pair of shorts, t-shirt and flip flops. Now warm February weather is both good and bad. The good part is that the weather has been outstanding. The bad part is that the very mild winter conditions we are experiencing is not forcing a large numbers of sailfish to migrate south. I've made mention of this in my other reports but this condition continues to persist. I consistently see local sailfish tournaments catching low numbers of sailfish and many of the winning boats taking victory with single digit or a very low double digit number of fish over a multiple day event. So what does this all mean you might ask? It means that the sailfishing continues to be inconsistent. One day we catch several and the next day we will never even see one. This has been happening to almost every captain I have spoken to. Again it does not mean that we will not catch one but the fish are just not here YET in great numbers, regardless of who you fish with. I know this is not what many people want to hear but I will tell you the truth and not what you want to hear just to get you to book a charter.
So let's get to the good part of this report. What are we catching? Lots of different fish. These fish have filled in the gaps from the slow sailfish bite. The kingfish have shown up in good size and numbers. We are catching them on the kite while sailfishing and also on the mid-depth and flat line rods. The kingfish have ranged from teenagers to fish well into the 20# class. In addition to kings the bottom bite has been very good to excellent. We had a couple of trips where we caught anywhere from 3-4 groupers per trip.
You can also add to the list mahi-mahi, false albacore, and spanish mackerel. We have many fishing options available to us we just have to fish to the conditions that we are presented with. Let's add one species to the list that has not failed me all year and that is the tarpon fishing. The tarpon bite has been good to excellent. We have been catching 2-4 fish per 4 hour trip. I did several tarpon trips the past couple of days and we caught fish on every one of our trips. You really can't beat the ease and simplicity of tarpon fishing. No long runs, no searching for bait, no blistering sun. You don't need to run way offshore to catch some of the biggest fish Florida has to offer. If you have never caught a tarpon you may want to consider this trip. Well that is all for now. Currently the month of February is almost sold out with a VERY few select days available but I do have several days available in March so give me a call and let's see if we can get you that trophy you have been after.
Until next time, Best of Luck…
