Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
Hopefully you had a great Mother's Day and were able to spend some quality time with family and also get in some fishing time. The action has been steadily heating up over the last month and it seems that it may have peaked over the last few days. Take your pick from mahi (dolphin), kingfish, blackfin tuna, and sailfish. These are just some of the species being caught as I write this report. Most of the time I haven't even been able to get the bottom rod down but I'm sure that if I did it would result in a nice mutton snapper or grouper.
Closer to shore there are still plenty of tarpon around with the largest specimens hanging around the beaches and inlets. Night fishing for yellowtail snapper and muttons has also been very good and should continue to improve as we head into the month of June. Big mangrove snapper will also start moving in to the reefs very soon and will hang out there most of the summer.
On recent trips we've had very steady action with very little down time. We are still averaging at least 2-3 sailfish on full days at least one on half or afternoon trips. On Saturday I had the pleasure of fishing with JJ and his son Jr. Over the last three or four years this duo have caught quite an assortment of fish while fishing with me. Last year we fished the Columbus High School tournament and did very well with the top kingfish and top tuna. This year we once again competed and put together a nice catch. Our game plan was adjusted at the last minute to take advantage of the winds. It didn't take us long to find action once our two kites went airborne. We used goggle eyes, herring, cigar minnows, and Spanish sardines and ended the day going 3 for 3 on sailfish, 3 kingfish to 20 pounds, 1 Blackfin tuna at about 21 pounds, and a couple of bonito. We also had two or three baits cut in half by skyrocketing kingfish. We witnessed this amazing site at least 7-8 times. Some of the kings were flying at least 8-10' in the air (an amazing spectacle). Once at the weigh in we learned that we had the top kingfish and third largest tuna. Congratulations to JJ and Jr. for another good showing.
On the trip before that we had 3 sailfish and 8 bonito in less than 3 hours. The best part of that trip was that we didn't miss a single bite. It's hard to have a bad day when you have a great hook up ratio. Alexander was able to catch and release his first sailfish with ease on this day. We were also supposed to participate in the Grove Slam dolphin tournament with a film crew but had to cancel because the producer didn't feel the weather would be ideal for the filming process.

Well, that is pretty much it for now! Fishing should remain good for a while and if you like catching a variety of fish you can eat, there is no better time to go fishing than now. Miami Fishing Forecast:
It will be hard to find a better time to fish South Florida than the present. We should continue to enjoy great fishing through the end of May and great fishing (mahi and snapper) through July.
