Part 1 Holiday Fishing in North Biscayne Bay

Capt. Alan Sherman
January 10, 2013
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

It's been a while since my last fishing report and I apologize for that. Lots of fishing charters and great times were had by all of my great clients this Holiday Season! I am breaking up this report into two parts. Part 1 and Part2.

We did not have the typical fishing we are used to this time of year but by being creative and fishing were the fish were we I was able to keep my clients with bent fishing rods and happy faces.

I expect with the mild conditions that we are experiencing the fishing should not change much unless we get a strong winter storm.

Now to the RECENT CATCHES:

Fished with Eddie, his daughters Erica, Janine and son Joel for a half day in North Biscayne Bay. End result was plenty of sea trout and some big groupers that got away.

Today I am South Bay with Marjorie and Lisa. The girls are looking for some fish to take home for dinner. After loading the live wells with pilchards we headed south to fish a few spots for mackerel, grouper, snapper and anything else that might be interested in biting. At the end of the day the girls had released dozens of lesser amberjacks, bluerunners, jacks, a gag and red grouper, lots of small yellowtail, mutton and mangrove snappers. To take home with them the girls had two nice yellowtail and two nice mangrove snappers.

Next up was Paul and Jerry in North Bay for a full day of fishing. Filled the wells with pilchards and threadfin herring and then picked the guys up at their Condo. Headed out into the Bay and was totally surprised at how slow the fishing was all day. We struggled just to catch a few jacks, mackerel, kingfish and bluefish. After dropping the guys off at their place a huge flock of feeding gulls cauight my attention . I trolled some Rapala plugs in the area and caught over a dozen bluefish loosing easily the same amount at the boat. All of this in less than an hour.

Fished with my son Zach today offshore of Miami. Was looking for some groupers before the season closed. Caught plenty of bait and then hit the ocean to find three ro five foot seas. Kept going anyway. My pathfinder Bay boat is a very seas worthy boat and my Yamaha SHO is as dependable an engine as anyone could ask for. After hitting a number of spots Zach and I had caught legal red and black groupers, under size gag and red groupers and a beautiful coney grouper.

Today I have Jerry and his grand kids in North Bay for a ¾ day. Caught lots of bait and then hit some of the spots that had been producing plenty of fish. Sea trout, jacks, small mackerel and kingfish and a small snook and some bluefish kept the kids happy.

Today I am with Sue Cocking from the Miami Herald and some of her family members. After catching plenty of bait we hit a few spots in hopes of catching some mackerel for dinner. We landed one mackerel and lost six others in the first spot before heading offshore to see if the mackerel might be bigger and in better numbers. They weren't there. Hit a nice wreck and the guys caught one lesser amberjack after another until their arms ached. Sue hooked up a fish that was running like crazy before the fish released the bait. When she reeled in the bait we saw that the hook had turned into the bait making it almost impossible to hook. Maybe a cobia! We headed back into the Bay. Again I saw birds diving so we trolled some Rapala X Raps in the area and caught bluefish, small kingfish and mackerel.
Back in the North Bay with Andrew and his son Austin. This afternoon half day resulted in lots of bluefish, jacks, two small kingfish and a bunch of sea trout.

This ended the week! I will pick up Part 2 soon!
I am often asked when is the best time to fish? Normally I answer with "When you Can". From now till December everyday no matter what the weather is is the best time to fish. Miss a day during the Fall Migration and you may have missed the best fishing of your life!

All of these fish were caught using Key Largo spinning rods, Daiwa Advantage spinning reels, Okuma spinning reels, Shimano spinning reels and Stren and P-Line lines.

What are you waiting for? Pick up the phone and lets go catch some snook!
