Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
The fishing action has taken off and is running on all cylinders. Anglers can pretty much take their pick from a myriad of species. Over the last couple of weeks sailfish have continued coming through in very good numbers. We haven't had an all out blitz but the action had been pretty steady with an average of at least two or three shots per trip.
Dolphin are also starting to show up on a pretty consistent basis. Most of the dolphin are being caught by anglers dangling baits from kites intended for sailfish. Some of these dolphin have been in the very respectable size range. This past weekend I noticed a lot of boats specifically targeting the mahi mahi. The next couple of months will see a lot more large dolphin being caught. May is notoriously one of the best months for big slammer dolphin.
Another spicies that has been making a strong showing lately is kingfish. Just like the dolphin, many of these XL kingfish are being caught by anglers targeting spindlebeaks. Big kings love to eat large baits flown of a kite. Mixed in with the kings and dolphin will be quite a few blackfin tuna. Besides putting on a good battle these tuna are also quite tasty on the grill.
Besides all of the good offshore action, there have also been a couple of occassions were we fished inshore. On the first inshore trip, I was fishing with a couple of editors for Florida Fishing Weekly and our goal was to test some new deep dropping gear. On this day the wind was blowing 25+Kts and the guys quickly changed their minds. We decided to remain inshore and try our luck. The action quickly heated up and soon we had released five or six nice snook with a couple of slot fish. We also managed to release at least ten very large jacks. The guys had a great time and we all agreed to do it again.
On another recent trip I fished with one of my regular customers who has quickly become addicted to fly fishing. During the course of the day we had shots at tarpon, barracuda and jacks (lots of jacks). We also tried to chum up some sharks but did not see a single fish. All in all we had a great day.

Miami Fishing Forecast:
Look for fishing to remain strong for at least one to two months. April and especially may will also start seeing more large mutton snapper on the reefs an wrecks in addition to everything already mentioned.
