Miami, Florida - Offshore

Capt. Mark Houghtaling
August 28, 2001
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Did you notice a slight change in the weather this past week? Early in the

morning the air was a little drier, and the temperature a degree cooler. You

can bet the fish did, and it won’t be long before the fall migration of baitfish

begins. Pilchards should start moving into the bay and along the beaches, and

the gamefish won’t be far behind.

There are still reports of small Dolphin out in the Gulf Stream. Captain Jimbo

Thomas on the Thomas Flyer out of Bayside marina, reported finding small

Dolphin offshore around huge mats of Sargassum weed. He said it was

necessary to inspect each mat of weed for fish. Many of these fish are almost

too small to keep ,but if you keep at it you can find enough fish to make the

trip worthwhile. They also caught Wahoo in the same area.

Along the edge of the Gulf Stream there are loads of Bonita, and many of

them are over 12 lbs. This is an excellent time to try your luck using a flyrod.

They will hit a fly readily when chummed to the boat with live pilchards.

They can also be great fun on almost any tackle when your just looking for a

good fight.

When the winds have been blowing in the right direction, kite fisherman are

quick to get their kites flying and fish the edge of the reef. When they do,

they have been catching an occasional sailfish and plenty of bonita. This time

of the year is not usually know for good sailfishing, however, they are on the

move, and surprisingly anglers will catch a few during an afternoon of kite

fishing.
