Miami, Florida - Offshore

Capt. Mark Houghtaling
May 6, 2002
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

This weekend we finally saw a push of dolphin into our area. Recently, the dolphin action has been slow. Many captains were wondering if we were going to have a decent dolphin season at all this year. I fished on Friday and found a weedline approximately 15 miles offshore and came up empty handed. Captain Jimbo Thomas on the Thomas Flyer found a few fish on the same weedline, but that was it for the rest of the day. On Saturday there were a few more fish caught, and a few bigger one’s were hitting the tables. And on Sunday many anglers found fish only a few miles offshore. Weather forecasts for the beginning of the week are saying winds out of the east and southeast at about 10 to 15 plus. These winds should push more fish into our area. I am hoping for a good week of dolphin fishing. Also, look for bottom fishing to be good during the next few weeks. Mutton Snapper should be on the prowl and willing to hit a lively bait fished off the bottom. The wrecks are holding Amberjack and if you fish the outside areas of the wrecks you will find bigger Muttons. Along the edge there are still plenty of Sailfish for the kite fisherman, and the kingfishing has been excellent in the area of Government Cut.
