Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Believe it or not, the dolphin have finally started to trickle into the Miami area. On some days fishing has been terrific, and on other days you have to hunt to find fish. The most recent trip found us in 1300 feet of water, with slick calm seas, with a broken up weedline. Lots of debris was found with very few dolphin under the debris. We did notice almost no baitfish under any piece of debris we found( and we found quite a bit). The only fish we did find was under diving sooty terns. The fish have been small ( 2to 3 pounds) occasionally we would find an honest 6 pounder. However,on another trip, the day prior to the one above, we found larger fish averaging an honest 5 to 7 pounds and we caught three fish in the twenty pound class. We caught all the fish we cared to clean. We moved in on the edge around Triumph Reef and hooked a double on Sailfish and ended up releaseing one out of the two. After running all over the ocean looking for dolphin in the morning we came across a school of small dolphin in 140 feet of water and we caught and released over sixty fish. They followed us all the way into 80 feet of water. We caught the dolphin on yellow Ny Lure jigs. the sailfish hit slow trolled live threadfin herring.
