Miami, Florida - Offshore

Capt. Mark Houghtaling
June 10, 2003
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

I was getting a little worried that they would never show up! But this week, we found numerous dolphin under birds and boards off the Miami waters. Surprisingly many of the fish were real 5 to 8 pound fish. In fact many of the fish had to be gaffed, instead of just lifting them into the boat. Previously, dolphin fishing had been awful. Very few fish were found except the occasional bull or cow. Then at the beginning of the week we found a lot of birds but they were all on Artic Bonita. Then the following day they showed up. Just as classical as ever. They were under boards and birds and very hungry. I made a trip south to find Mutton Snapper, which, by the way, were around in fairly good numbers. Not a lot of huge fish but they were legal and hungry. We made it all the way down to Carysfort Light and then ran offshore to find dolphin, and within the first hour we found four flocks of birds with dolphin under every flock. We kept a dozen fish, but could have kept ten dozen fish. I guess if you want a lot of dolphin you should head a bit further south. I would look for dolphin fishing to improve over the next couple of weeks. Look for good Mutton Snapper fishing just before and after the full moon in June. There are an unbelievable amount of Bonita along the edge of the reef. Most people think they are a pain in the ass, but if you are a fly fisherman, you couldn’t have a better opportunity to catch a few on a fly.
