Miami, Florida - Offshore

Capt. Mark Houghtaling
May 15, 2000
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Here today, gone tomorrow. That’s been the best way to describe the Dolphin

action. Just when you think they are here to stay for a while, they up and

disappear for a couple of days. The anglers that have been finding fish, have

been having the best luck from 400 to 800 feet of water. Fisherman have

been finding it easy to find a weedline. They report that there have been

multiple weedlines to fish offshore. One captain off Key Largo reported

finding the largest weedline he had seen in years......except without fish. We

found diving petrals working a weedline off Ocean Reef Yacht Club during a

late afternoon last week. A large school of anxious schoolies would hit our

live baits, but most of them were too small to keep. Action should resume

with the next wave of Dolphin pushing our way. Before the lull in the action,

anglers were finding plenty of larger fish under Frigate birds.

Sailfishing is still good along the edge. Anglers wanting to get in on the last

bit of good kite fishing will do well to live bait on the edge of the reef. The

current has been good moving to the north. With a good wind to keep the

kites aloft the combination should produce good kite fishing action. Along

with the Sails there should be Dolphin, Tuna, Kings, and plenty of Bonita.

Bottom fishing has been good. There are Amberjack on all the wrecks. Last

week the “Magic Fingers” caught a 20 pound Red Grouper, a 15 pound

Black Grouper, Amberjack, and Mutton Snapper. The “bite” for Mutton

Snapper has been good off Key Largo, especially in the late afternoon. Night

fishing for snapper should start heating up along with the afternoon

temperatures. Periods around the full moon should produce good

yellowtailing and Mangrove Snapper fishing on the deeper reefs. Target

ledges and dropoffs from 40 to 90 feet of water.

The Annual Perrine Cutler Ridge Kiwanis Club Dolphin Tournament will be

held on Saturday, June 10th. The captain’s meeting will be held at 8:00 p.m.

at the Old Cutler Oyster Co. on SW 184 St. and South Dixie Highway on

Thursday June 8th. There will be a guaranteed first prize of $ 5000.00. There

will be a fish fry after the tournament at OC’s. For more information call

Captain Marty Locke at 305-788-5991.
