Miami Fishing Report: Key Biscayne to Triumph Reef

Capt. Orlando Muniz
April 4, 2007
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Springtime Variety!

Over the past week I have been fishing pretty hard. The good news is that the high winds have finally subsided giving us the great weather we look forward to. The not so good news is that the red hot sailfish bite that we had a couple of weeks ago has slowed along with the winds.

The sailfish have not vacated the area by any means, most boats are still getting anywhere from one to three shots per day. The key has been to find clean blue water and good northbound current. On my last couple of trips most fish have been caught in the afternoon. Hopefully they will turn on again as we approach the next phase of the moon.

Besides the steady action with the spindlebeaks we have also been seeing our fair share of dolphin or mahi mahi this week. We have caught some on two of the last three trips. So far this year we have not caught any slammers but that should change any day now.

Variety has been the word to describe this week's action. Yesterday we caught a mix of kingfish and dolphin that was hard to beat. Today, I began fishing right were I left off and could not get the kings or dolphin to eat. Luckily we had a couple of pink mutton snapper in the 5-10# range that were a bit more cooperative and a beautiful sail to put the finishing touch on a great day out.

Over the next couple of months we should start catching many more of these muttons on the bottom along with the mighty blackfins on the surface. Spring is one of the best times to fish South Florida as evidenced by a 195# pound yellowfin tuna that was caught this past weekend during the Miami Billfish Tournament.

I still have several dates that are open for April and May. Give me a call if you would like to get in on the action.
