North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing North Biscayne Bay

with Capt. Alan Sherman

Fishing in North Biscayne Bay remains very good. Fishing conditions have been changing almost daily but the one thing that has stayed constant is the wind. The nice thing about North Biscayne Bay is that there is always some protected waters somewhere near by. The numerous grass flats in the bay have had good numbers of large Speckled Sea Trout. On almost every trip we have had at least one fish at least 20”s and just under 4 lbs. There have been plenty of fish over 15”s and of course many juvenile fish. We have been catching them on live Shrimp and Pilchards under a Cajun Thunder popping cork, and artificial lures like the Hank Brown Hook Up Lure with a Saltwater Assassin plastic grub tail. I have been experimenting with a new product called Fish Bites. The product is a small strip that is made up of a chemical fish essence that is impregnated onto a fabric. The fabric is cut into strips and makes a great tip for a jig. The strips come in Crab and Shrimp flavors and so far the Trout, Pompano and Jacks have responded well to it. The larger Speckled Sea Trout are spawning right now and full of roe. They are in season and you are allowed 1 per person over 20”s but I urge you to release the bigger females and give them a chance to spawn out. Mixed in with the Speckled Sea Trout have been a few nice Pompano, Jack Crevalles and Ladyfish. On the warmer days small Barracudas and at times quite a few Snook have added some spice to our trips. Tarpon have been plentiful around the Ocean inlets and on the outside beaches when the winds have allowed us to fish them plus an occasional Permit.

For anyone interested, the Mast Academy High School is having the first Mast Academy PTSA Fishing Tournament on Sat. April 17th to raise money for scholarships. Entry forms can be obtained at your local fishing tackle dealers or by going on line to www.mast.dade.k12.fl.us or if you would like to be a sponsor of the tournament call 305-284-8311 and ask for Suzanne Levinson for more information.
