FISHING NORTH BISCAYNE BAY
with Capt. Alan Sherman
Recent Catches:April 21, 2004
Spring is here and with it Daylight Savings time, warmer temperatures and lots of wind. When I worked on the Party Boats out of Bakers Haulover the crews always looked forward to Spring because of the northward migration of baitfish and predators that would take place starting in late March and continuing through early May but we would also curse the strong Northeasterly Winds that came with it. Now that I’m an inshore guide the same goes.
The beginning of April brought one of he last cold fronts of the year, hopefully, and with
it colder temperatures and very strong winds. Water temperatures dropped 5 to 6 degrees
sending the fish into a winter pattern where they dropped back into deeper water and
stopped feeding like they had been. The baitfish that had been schooling up around the
many grass flats in North Biscayne Bay fled for warmer water and now we are left waiting for the bait to return. Before that cold front, schools of Finger Mullet, Pilchards, Spanish Sardines and Glass Minnows were schooled up on the edges of the grass flats and on top of the flats where large Roe Laden Speckled Sea Trout eagerly made quick work on them. Shrimp that are still in the bay made up the rest of the Trout’s diet. Pompano, small Spanish Mackerel, Jack Crevalles, Ladyfish, Barracudas, Bluefish and Tripletail joined in with the hungry Trout feeding right along side of each other. The rigs we have been using are the Hook Up Lures tipped with a Saltwater Assassin grub tail and a strip of Fishbites or a Cajun Thunder with a live Shrimp or baitfish suspended 30”s below it or an Oval Cajun Thunder with a Hook Up Lure tipped with a Saltwater Assassin grub tail and a strip of Fishbites or a Shallow Swimming or Surface Plug got plenty of attention from all of these predators. Warmer weather is on it’s way and with it we should start seeing the winds drop off leaving us with the long awaited real Spring Migration that should last way into June.
A special thanks to all of the Sponsors and volunteers that donated merchandise & time to ”The First Mast Academy’s Fun Fishing Tournament” that was held last week on Key Biscayne. A great time was had by all and fantastic merchandise was awarded to all of the winners. Over 40 winners received prizes. The tournament raised $2000 for scholarships.
