Fishing North Biscayne Bay

With Capt. Alan Sherman

Happy Holidays everyone! Hope every ones Thanks Giving was a great one!

This is one of the busiest times for fishing guides in South Florida but even the busiest have a few open dates to fill for the next three or four months and this is a great time to reserve one of those open dates. It is also a great time to purchase a holiday gift charter for a good friend, business relation or a family member.

Now for a fishing update,

Fishing in North Biscayne Bay has been very interesting for the past few weeks. We have

had some very windy days with cooler temperatures and at times some heavy rain. None of this however has hampered our fishing style here in North Biscayne Bay because North Biscayne Bay has plenty of protected areas to fish. My boat the “Get Em” is equipped with plenty of Frogg Togg’s foul weather gear and is always close by when one of those rainsqualls gets in our way. With the cooler air temperatures fishing in the bay has been quite comfortable and as of now I am still wearing shorts. Plenty of baitfish have been scattered in the bay and with a few casts of my 10’ West Coast Cast net we have had enough bait for an entire day of fishing. Shrimp that are being sold at the local tackle shops have finally been of a decent size. Speckled sea trout for catch and release have been scattered over the grass flats and have been actively feeding on the live pilchards, threadfin herring, Spanish sardines and live shrimp. Spanish mackerel, bluefish, snapper, jack crevalle, ladyfish, barracuda, tarpon and snook have also been in good numbers in North Biscayne Bay. On some of the calm mornings we have been treated to some excellent action on tarpon, trout and jack crevalles. Seeing the large fish chasing the baitfish on top is one of the most exciting types of fishing we can experience in the bay and the best way to target these fish is either with live natural bait or a Sea Bay Sea Demon artificial lure the newest surface plug to be added to my tackle box. One of my clients Jerry Chaves turned me on to this new soft but very durable surface plug that resembles a Zarra Spook type plug that can be walked on the surface with very little effort by the angler. It’s body is soft enough to make the fish that’s about to eat it hold on to it and even try to swallow it like the 16.5 lb. jack crevalle I caught on 6 lb. spin. The large 5/0 cad tinned Mustad hook that is centered just in the right place to hook your fish will not tangle like the old style Zarra Spooks and because it is sized to resemble a 3” baitfish and weighs ¾ of an oz. it not only attracts all size fish and casts a mile with ease. Spanish and king mackerel have been providing us with quick and exciting action. Tarpon have been thick but as always it takes a bit of patience to get them to strike. Snook have been hit and miss but have given us a shot on most trips. Barracuda and snapper as always have been part of our catch on a daily basis.

Fishing in Flamingo in Everglades National Park has and will continue to be very good. Gone are the scorching hot days & hordes of mosquitoes that can keep most fisher people away from Flamingo.

With the holidays just around the corner you may be wondering what to get that sports person in your life. If you’re struggling with just that problem then maybe I can give you a hand.
