North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
December 14, 2004
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing North Biscayne Bay

with Capt. Alan Sherman

Time for a fishing update! The holidays are here and the weather has definitely turned a bit colder. Almost every week from now till April should bring at least 1 or 2 cold fronts. Plan a trip just before or a few days after the front and you can experience a great day of fishing here in South Florida. Water temperatures will be dropping a little every day and the fish will start getting less aggressive as their body’s start to feel the chill. That doesn’t mean they stop eating it just means you have to be a bit more patient with them. Fish a little deeper, a little slower and with smaller baits. Fish tend to feed on smaller things that their digestive tracts can digest easily when it is cold so now is when we down size our baits and lures. We can also get out a little later in the morning to give the sun a chance to warm things up. The sun hits the west side of North Biscayne Bay first so that is the side of the bay we hit first. We also turn our attention to the migratory fish like the mackerels, bluefish, pompano, cobia and grouper when the water cools down. These fish are used to colder temperatures therefore they are more cooperative. Tarpon will be up in Dumfoundling Bay in good numbers and Snook will be available for catch and release from Dec. 15th through Jan. 31st. Speckled Sea Trout will be in season at the first of the year and snapper, grouper, barracuda, ladyfish, pompano, cobia, tripletail, jacks, bluerunners, mackerel, bluefish and sharks will be our targeted species.

Flamingo in the winter is the prettiest a place in the world. More migratory birds are here then any other time of the year. Alligators, Crocodiles and Deer! Fishing can be quite good with snook, trout, reds, jacks, ladyfish, black drum, snapper, grouper, tarpon, cobia, bluefish, mackerel and tripletail just to mention a few.

So don’t just sit around hiding from the cooler temperatures, grab a sweater and give me a call and lets get out and take advantage of the cooler temperatures and migratory fish that are available this time of the year.
