North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
January 6, 2006
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing North Biscayne Bay, Offshore & Flamingo

with Capt. Alan Sherman

Wow another year of great fishing has passed and it’s time to start on this years great catches. If the great fishing of the past few months continue then 2006 is going to be one to remember! Hope everyone had a great holiday season and a Very Happy New Year!

It’s been awhile since my last report. I was very busy throughout December with charters and then getting ready for the holidays and the New Year. 2005 went out with a bang with some of the best fishing I’ve seen in along time. Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma played havoc with the Fall Migration of baitfish and predators and that created a pro longed migration that still continues. Schools of baitfish have been moving south for sometime and huge schools of Spanish mackerel have been working those baitfish schools to death. With the closed speckled sea trout season (which is now open) and the closed snook season (which opens Feb. 1st) the mackerel have kept us busy with almost non-stop action. These fish started out in the North Biscayne Bay and Dunfoundling Bay back in Sept. and Oct. and then moved into the inlets and now they are just off the beaches. Mackerel from 1 to 6 pounds have been caught by my clients and in big numbers. We have targeted the mackerel with 6 to 8 lb. Spin and fly tackle and used live pilchards and pilchard flies to get their attention. Anchoring and chumming or just drifting and casting to the baitfish schools has been the best method of fishing. Along with the mackerel have been bonita’s, bluerunners, jack crevalles to 10 pounds, ladyfish and small to medium sized king mackerel. On one trip recently one of my clients hooked an estimated 80 pound tarpon on 8 lb. Spin using a live pilchard. After 40 minutes of fighting the fish and taking some nice action pictures during a 4 hr. charter the angler realized the battle could go on for hours and decided to apply extra pressure, which eventually broke the line. I did notice a mischievous smile on the anglers face for just a moment. Fishing in North Biscayne Bay has produced some nice size sea trout, bluefish, ladyfish, jack crevalles and an occasional snook. Other areas that have been successful recently have been the finger channels of Key Biscayne for snapper, red & black grouper, porgies, grunts and Spanish mackerel. Another hot spot has been in the Everglades City area we have fished the Port of The Islands and the Tamiami Trail for snook, redfish, trout and tarpon. Some of the best action came from fishing on the shorelines of the Trail.

I am now writing 2 new fishing reports for Florida Sportsman. The first is on the Florida Sportsman’s Internet sight in the Fishing Forecast for the south region. The second is the Florida Sportsman Magazines South Florida Fishing Report. We continue to broadcast the Florida Sportsman Magazine Live on WKAT 1360 AM every Sat. morning from 7 to 8 AM. And if you weren’t listening on Dec. 24th then you missed out on over a $1000 worth of giveaways.

The great fishing will continue throughout the winter for sea trout, snook, tarpon, redfish, black drum, snapper, grouper, ladyfish, sharks, barracudas, pompano and bluefish in the bay and Flamingo and offshore on the nice days king & Spanish mackerel, bonitas, sailfish, amberjack, grouper, snapper and dolphin will make up our catches. With my new Pathfinder Bay boat I can now take advantage of the inshore and offshore species on almost any nice day.

You know you can’t wait to be my next satisfied client by taking advantage of the great fishing and weather. So don’t hesitate, grab the phone and give me a call and let’s set up your next fishing adventure with me Capt. Alan Sherman on my new Pathfinder the “Get Em”.
