North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
November 1, 2006
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

FISHING NORTH & SOUTH BISCAYNE BAY, OFFSHORE & FLAMINGO

with Capt. Alan Sherman

October flew by with only mediocre fishing in South Florida. The expected fall migration has been going on since September but the long awaited arrival of the gamefish that follow the baitfish south for the winter has only been a trickle of what I had hoped would already be here. Spanish sardines moved into North Biscayne Bay months ago, finger mullet and large silver and black mullet have been moving along the beaches and into the bay for sometime where jack crevalles, sea trout, snook, tarpon, ladyfish, a few Spanish mackerel and bluefish have been feeding on them. Offshore schools of flying fish, ballyhoo and sardines have also been moving south but only a few king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, bonito, dolphin and wahoo have been feeding on them. So what’s the deal? Where are all of the gamefish I have been anxiously awaiting? Well the answer is they have not made it to South Florida as of yet and the reason is that it just hasn’t been cold enough to get the fish here. They are still relaxing in beautiful summer conditions just north of us. Good thing is that the long awaited cold fronts are starting to arrive with one a week and soon two a week will be the norm and we will see water temperatures start dropping. That will get the fish moving south and into our area in a matter of days and it may already be happening. In my business you can’t be everywhere every day. In North Biscayne Bay in the last month or so we have caught snook, tarpon, sea trout, jack crevalles to 12 pounds, barracuda, ladyfish, Spanish mackerel, juvenile king mackerel, snapper and grouper. Offshore we have caught Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, bonito, jacks, snapper and dolphin and watched a charter boat fight an estimated 250-pound blue marlin before losing it. We had one day fishing along the beach where we had shots at a large school of pompano and then cast numerous times at a school of what we though were large jack crevalles but turned out to be permit with over 50 fish in it and as big as 50 pounds. Yes that is what the fall migration is all about but I’m looking for is the mother load and that has yet to happen.

Recent Catches: Ken Ryder and his daughter Alex teamed up to catch loads of jack crevalles to 5 pounds, small snappers, barracudas and 2 snook and then fed a jack crevalles to a huge bull shark fishing North Biscayne Bay on a ½ day trip.

On a slow ½ day of fishing North Biscayne Bay Shahid Karim his daughter Asha and his son Paul caught over a dozen jack crevalles to 6 pounds, barracuda and a few Spanish mackerel.

The same day in the afternoon, also slow fishing in North Biscayne Bay Alfredo Santeiro and his son Austin caught lots of jack crevalles to 8 pounds, barracuda, lizard fish, sea trout and a few Spanish mackerel.

Steve Ziegler and his son Zachary each caught a snook plus lots of jack crevalles and barracudas in North Biscayne Bay.
