Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing North & South Biscayne Bay, Flamingo and Offshore with Capt. Alan Sherman
Hope everybody had a great Thanksgiving and have had enough time to digest the turkey, because its time to do some real fishing. Our weather here in South Florida has taken on a more winter like temperature and water temperatures are on the way down. Spanish mackerel have been biting real good up and down the coast just outside the beaches con out to the outer reef where king mackerel have finally showed up in good numbers. Most of the kings are in the 2 to 10 pound class but some have been as big as 40 pounds. Sailfishing has taken a turn for the better as is expected this time of the year with many of the offshore boats getting multiple hookups. Grouper are moving into the shallow water rocky areas and some real nice mutton snappers have been sharing the same areas, as the groupers and dolphin will continue to play hit and miss as the winds circulate from northeast to southeast. Inshore in North Biscayne bay we have been catching Spanish mackerel, small bluefish, sea trout for catch and release, bluerunners and jack crevalles. Snook have been in some areas but not easy to catch. I just made my first trip to the finger channels this year and was pleasantly surprised with a good catch of mutton snappers and groupers. As always these fish were undersized but plentiful and on light tackle kept my anglers rods bent in between the bluerunners, Spanish mackerel and grunts. I had a chance to fish my son Zach and nephew Alexander out on the Tamiami Trail the other day and fishing from Everglades City west to Marco we caught 5 snook plus some gars and Alexander somehow caught a large mullet on a plug. We saw lots of snook but couldn’t match the hatch. Flamingo fishing has been very good for Spanish mackerel, bluefish, jacks, ladyfish, sharks and soon pompano out in the Gulf of Mexico when the weather has allowed us to get out in the open water otherwise fishing in the protected creeks and behind sheltered islands has produced good action on sea trout, sheepshead, small redfish and a few snook.
The Holidays are fast approaching and now is the time to start thinking about purchasing a fishing adventure onboard the “Get Em” with Capt. Alan Sherman for someone you love, like or do business with. Contact me at 786-436-2064 or send an e-mail at [email protected].

Some of you may have heard recently Jim Hardie who wrote the Fishing Report on Thursday’s for the Miami Herald recently passed away. Jim did a wonderful job keeping everyone in South Florida up to date on the fishing from week to week and will be missed. I have taken over for Jim writing the Heralds Fishing Report and I truly hope to keep the report going as well as Jim did.
