North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
February 19, 2007
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

FISHING NORTH & SOUTH BISCAYNE BAY, OFFSHORE & FLAMINGO with CAPT. ALAN SHERMAN

After a slow start in the winter weather it looks like the cold weather has finally arrived and now it is just a matter of time to see if the fishing will get back to a more normal pace. In the last two days I have seen water temperatures go from the upper 70’s to the low 60’s and this is what we would have expected in late December and January. Colder water temperatures mean more migratory fish like king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, pompano, large ladyfish, large jack crevalles and groupers in North and South Biscayne Bay waters plus the shrimp runs that congregate large tarpon around the ocean inlets and beaches and this is something I for one have anxiously been waiting for. Already I have seen a return of the Spanish mackerel and jack crevalles to the bay plus loads of sea trout continue to keep us busy throughout the day. Most captains I have talked to seem to think that all of our fishing inshore and offshore will be month behind schedule and that may very well be but if there is one thing I know about fishing it is that you can never predict exactly what a fish is thinking and the only way to get that catch of a lifetime is to get out and test the waters to your best ability and see what turns up. I for one never know just how a fishing trip is going to turn out till the trip is over and because of that I fish till the last minute like I just started the day.

Fishing in North Biscayne Bay has been excellent for sea trout. We are catching the trout on live shrimp and pilchards suspended under a Cajun Thunder and while fishing for the trout we are catching Spanish mackerel, bluerunners, jack crevalles, ladyfish and barracudas. We are also having good success on Hook Up Lures with soft plastic tails and a piece of Fishbites for added scent. Rapala Twitchin Raps, X Raps and Skitter Walks have produced some nice sea trout and large jack crevalles as big as 12 pounds. On one trip one of my clients hooked a large jack maybe in the 10 pound class on a Twitchin Rap only to have another large jack try and steal the lure from the original jack leading to the hooks being virtually pulled out of the plug as each fished tried to swim in a different direction and that happened after a long fight on 8 lb. spin.

South Biscayne Bay has produced catches of jack crevalles, ladyfish, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, bluerunners, yellowjacks, lesser amberjacks and snapper and grouper while fishing the Finger Channels.

Offshore there have been sailfish and dolphin available with the best action on the sails on the rougher days when winds have been out of the north and the current going north right into the wind which creates a rough condition for a bay boat so I have not been able to fish the offshore waters as much as I would like. On the calmer days offshore we have had good luck on king mackerel, bonito, amberjacks and lots of lane snappers plus a few mystery fish.

Flamingo fishing remains very good with decent catches of redfish on the flats and finger channels, plus a few snook and some very large sea trout. Fishing the open Gulf of Mexico has produced good catches of Spanish mackerel, bluefish, pompano, a few cobia, tripletail, jacks and ladyfish plus lots of sharks and in the creeks, canals and rivers small redfish, sheepshead, black drum, grouper, snapper and an occassional snook have been available for those that don’t mind soaking a bait on the bottom for awhile.

If you have time to head over to Bass Pro Shops on Saturday or Sunday come by the Mustad Booth and say hi. I will be helping out the guys at Mustad throughout the weekend. While your there check out the Mustad line of products that Mustad has to offer the South Florida Fishing community.

Hope everyone had a chance to see the new Yamaha 350 horsepower four stroke outboard engine at the Boat Show this past weekend, the engine will be available in the summer. Maverick introduced the 2007 22’ Tournament Addition Pathfinder to its list of bay boats and wow I really liked what I saw. I had hoped to get a test ride but ended up fishing some the Yamaha execs and had no time to do much else.
