Fishing Report for Northern Miami-Dade County

Capt. Dave Kostyo
October 6, 2003
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week has seen some hot and cold fishing. Earlier in the week, there were a few days of very hot kingfishing. Then like turning off a light, it shut down drastically. There were still a few being caught, but nothing like it was on Tuesday. One of the keys to being successful was getting out early as the action tapered off as early as 9:30 in the morning. The kings were in the 130-150 foot range during the early part of the week. On Sunday, they moved out much deeper and were being caught outside of 190 feet. The key was getting a bait down deep.

Dolphin are continuing to make a consistent showing in the 5-10 mile range. One day the birds will put you on them, the next day you blind troll a weedline, on another day they are around a large floating object, and still another you troll in the scattered weed areas. The fish have ranged in size from 3-10 pounds. Also, now is the time to make sure that you get a bait down deep when you are dolphin fishing. There have been a fair number of wahoo being caught.

For those looking for sailfish, they are around and cooperating. Finding north current and clean blue water greatly improves your chances of doing battle with this highly acrobatic fish. With the wind picking up as it has, it is now time to start flying the kite and fishing some baits down wind of the boat.

Finding several pieces of bamboo tied together put us on some good dolphin action as well as blackfin tuna late in the afternoon. The next day we worked a very long weedline 10 miles out to find a couple of dolphin and a tripletail. There were lots of boards in the weedline, but most only held bait fish and no dolphin. On Sunday, the blue/green edge continually moved offshore despite a NE wind of 15-20 mph. The edge produced kingfish in 190 feet and a beautiful sailfish in 250'. All of our action took place half way between the Twin Towers and the Lotus range.

Now is the time to start booking your winter sailfish and tarpon trips. Winter tarpon fishing is right around the corner. By booking early, you'll greatly improve your chances of getting the date or dates you want. It's also a good time to think about ordering your fishing trip gift certificates for the Holiday season.
