Fishing Report for Miami, Florida

Capt. Bouncer Smith
March 27, 2003
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

“Gold Coast Grand Slam” season has arrived. This slam consist of a sailfish, a

dolphin and a tarpon. Yesterday my charter party of 3, Don Dietrich, Mark Brecher

and Rich Stovall and I headed out at noon to try to get a slam. At the end of 9 hours

of fishing we had 7 sailfish, 4 dolphin, 6 bonito and 3 tarpon. Don and Mark both

caught slams!

Don and Mark fished with me today. We started fishing at a little after 1 and by

9:30 we had 9 sailfish, 6 dolphin, a couple king mackerel, a skipjack tuna and 2

tarpon in the 110 to 120 pound class. 2 guys, 2 more Gold Coast Grand Slams.

Don, Mark and Rich all fished again on Wednesday from noon on. They wanted

to try some wreck fishing. We got some amberjacks on the wrecks and some small

grouper in very deep water. It was slow, so we put the kite up for a brief period late

in the day. Mark got his 9th sailfish of the week. A small king and a lost dolphin and

lost sail rounded out that period. It was time to head offshore and try for a

swordfish. Don caught and released a 75 pound swordfish about 1 hour into the first

drift. We repeated the drift and Rich caught and released a swordfish about 30

pounds. The final drift went hitless and it was time to head home.

The guys had fished 3 days and caught 17 sailfish, 5 tarpon from 60 to 125

pounds, a bunch of dolphin, about a dozen bonitos, a few king mackerel, some

amberjacks, assorted bottom dwellers and 2 swordfish.

The sails and their cohorts are hitting in 90 to 120 feet of water on live herring

suspended from kites or fished on flatlines. The tarpon are found around

Government Cut and are eating live shrimp. Of course the sailfish and tarpon are

released, but most of the eating fish are headed back north for the dinner tables this

summer.

We have some open dates on Bouncer’s Dusky 33 the first week of April. Call us

at 305-945-5114 and we’ll go get in on the action.
