Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing was red hot on Saturday. We got off to a bad start with birthday boy Peter Katz, his son and his son-in-law. It seemed that the fish were biting our live pilchards and herring, but they would not stay on the hook. Things turned around after the first hour. Fishing in 120 feet of water off Key Biscayne we caught a couple kingfish over 20 pounds, 6 more over 10 pounds soon came to the boat. The anglers were calling home to warm up their smoker for some smoked kingfish in the future. They also released all kings over their limit of 2 per person. A couple bonito added to the action. As the afternoon progressed the sailfish took over center stage. By the end of the day 2 of these dancing beauties had joined the action. They of course were released to catch again another day.
Speaking of releases, on April 20th Keith Baskette caught and released a tagged sailfish with us. We removed the tag and contacted the National Marine Fisheries Service. We gave them the tag number and have learned that this sailfish had been tagged and released by the Scrambler in the same area on the 17th of April.
Saturday evening the fishing action continued at it’s fevered pace. In one and a half hours, Brad Orvieto and his guest caught 2 kings over 30 pounds, 2 over 20 pounds and 4 more over 10 pounds. His guest added 2 bonito to the score and then Brad caught his first sailfish ever. On the way home we made a couple drifts for tarpon at Government Cut. While fishing with two crabs and one shrimp, a huge tarpon ate the shrimp. Two spectacular jumps showed this fish to be over 180 pounds. The bad news is that this monster threw the hook and swam away.
