Fishing Report for Miami, Florida

Capt. Bouncer Smith
July 26, 2003
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Kid's Catches

The last ten days have been a variety of action. We had a six year old out with his grandfather and mother. They wanted the young guy to catch some fish, with no angling rules to worry about. We have some short tough conventional rods with Penn lever drag levelwind reels. I figured the little guy could wind in some pretty good fish on these without picking up the rod. He did great. He got a bonito, a small dolphin and a whopping 28 pound blackfin tuna along the reef. Then at the inlet he caught a nice jack crevalle and several barracudas. His trip was fun for all.

The next day it was off to Bimini with fly rods armed. We had a good trip. We had loads of yellowtail snapper on fly. We caught some big horse eye jacks on plugs and with bait. We had a 30 pound kingfish. We caught several sharks on fly. They were quite a challenge to get to bite and then great fights to get boat side. One fellow rose early in the morning and got his first bonefish while fly casting from the beach. Medium size barracuda were thick as always, but big ones were rare. A few grouper gobbled bucktail jigs fish on the bottom.

Returning to Miami we had a dolphin trip on Sunday. The dolphin bit well on Saturday, but were scarce on Sunday. We switched plans to wreck fishing and had a great day. We had a 25 pound gray grouper, mutton snapper of 4 and 10 pounds, several bonito and a numerous amberjacks to 25 pounds.

Weekday trips are scarcer now, but we got some nice snook, kingfish and bonitos. Friday’s trip with Armando Delgado and his sons Nick and Aaron was great. Aaron is the only guy in the family without a sailfish under his belt. That was our first goal, considering the slow dolphin action during the week, plus the good sailfish conditions. It took a couple hours, but after the boys caught half a dozen bonitos and several kings, Aaron got his sailfish. After that we moved inshore in search of calmer waters. The gang got 5 snook to 15 pounds and 3 out of 6 tarpon up to 60 pounds. That made for a great trip.
