Fishing Report for Northern Miami-Dade County

Capt. Dave Kostyo
March 29, 2004
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

The wind has finally come down and it's time to get back out and do some fishing. Sunday (3/28) evening when we arrived at Government Cut, there were tarpon rolling everywhere. Before it got dark, we had two shots, both resulting in the fish making a very short run and coming up jumping and throwing the hook. After it got dark, the fish seemed to disappear. Several drifts later, we got another shot with the same results. OUCH!! The tarpon definitely evened the score some this evening. We are still getting all of our strikes using shrimp. It won't be long before the shrimp will get much smaller and it'll be time to switch over to crabs.

Monday (3/29) was the first time I have been fishing offshore in a while. We loaded up on pilchards and started about a 1/4 mile north of the Cuban Hole. A NW wind @ 9-12 MPH gave us an offshore drift. The downrigger produced a 12 pound kingfish in 140'. Next the deep rod fished just off the bottom produced several more kings out to as deep as 212'. The flatline hooked up with a large barracuda that put on a great show before the hook pulled. We had 5 kings in the box and released a small one, so we moved out to 300' where we found a weedline and dolphin. Most were small, so we only kept a few for dinner. We then caught and released about 12 more fish using live bait, cut bait and jigs on spinning rods. The fish just kept following us and were jumping all around the boat. The front pushed through and the wind picked up to 25 MPH. The dolphin finally lost interest and left us. Moving back in to 95', we made our final drift of the 3/4 day trip. The solid hook up came on a flatline and after a 10 minute fight, we added an 18 pound kingfish to the box.

Kingfish and dolphin are making their springtime appearance and it shouldn't be long before the blackfin tuna join in. Evening tarpon fishing will remain steady and we'll see the size of the fish increase. Give me a call to get in on the action, April is filling up quickly.
