Fishing Report for Miami, Florida

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

December Fishing Arrives

December fishing, here we come. Get ready for some great winter fishing here in south Florida. We had some great fishing the last couple weeks and closed out November with our first tarpon action of the season.

Don and Sandy Blake brought an old friend, Ray Stormont out for some tarpon hunting on November 28th. We found a couple fish along the beach, but the fish won. Sandy got a good fight out of a nice sized tarpon on 8 pound line, but we had a line failure ending that game. Ray had a good fight on 12 pound line and another nice tarpon which spit the hook just as the leader was approaching the rod tip for the release.

The Jeremy Hochensmith fishing gang had much better luck with those tarpon. In less than 2 hours they caught 3 tarpon from 40 to 60 pounds and jumped one more.

Tom and John Kunkle had some good fishing to get December started. They caught and released 3 sailfish, a small shark and 8 dolphin.

Friday night the tarpon won all rounds again. We jumped a couple bigger fish than earlier in the week. The tarpon appeared to be in the 80 pound class, but the encounters were way too short. We did capture a big spanish mackerel along with a snapper and small shark.

Doug and Andria Child joined us for the weekend. They even brought a couple wonderful other ladies with them on Saturday. Saturday they caught 1 out of 3 sailfish that sampled their live herring on the kite. A half dozen dolphin pleased the ladies for providing some great future dinners. A king mackerel, a small shark and a 30 pound amberjack filled out the day.

Jeremy and company were back on Saturday night to continue dominating the fishing scene. This time we were in search of swordfish. They caught a very beautiful 140 pound swordfish to share with friends for dinner, released a 100 pound swordfish for the future of the sport and tagged and released a 50 pound swordfish to make the evening super.

Sunday started like any charter captains nightmare. The fleet was catching a few sailfish, but Doug and Andria could not buy a bite. As the morning came to a close, I was in a panic. We had finally caught one very small shark. After the anglers finished lunch, I was reminded of why I only offer full day trips. Our number was finally called. We finished the afternoon with 5 sailfish caught and released, including 4 of those sailfish being tagged.

Sunday night we were back out for swordfish with John Kletke from Idaho. John got the pleasure of catching, tagging and releasing one swordfish early in the evening and releasing another near the end of the evening.

So as expected in December, the sailfish, tarpon and swordfish are here. With a busy season ahead, we need to urge you to plan ahead. Make your reservations to join the fun. Mark your calendar that we will be appearing at Dusky Sport Center on January 18th to talk about kite fishing for sails and others. And order those Christmas gift DVDs of Successful Swordfishing from hydroglow.com or grab a copy at your local tackle shop to please your big game angling friends.
