Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
September 24, 2000
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

High winds during the early part of the week kept most boats in, but as the week progressed and into the weekend, the fishing and weather improved. Towards the end of the week, there were plenty of dolphin caught in 200 -500 ft of water.

We definitely had a mixed bag of fish and most of them were quality fish. The action was pretty much non-stop with dolphin, kingfish, balckfin tuna, sharks and bonitas. The most unusual catch was a 15-pound grouper, which ate a flatline pilchard in 240 ft. of water. The dolphin were all pretty nice size schoolies with the biggest one up to 20 lbs. The kingfish bite was also pretty good, with the best bite occurring in the afternoon. We had what was probably a really big kingfish bite straight through a # 4 wire leader. Some would say use a heavier leader, but I think that will reduce the bites. Our kingfish were between 5 - 10 pounds but we heard of some 30 pounders being caught just south of us.

The wahoo fishing is still good, although we didn't catch one, we saw wahoo in our kite baits. They bit our goggle eyes in half and always bit right behind the hook. We didn't catch any sailfish, although I heard some being caught on the VHF. During one of our drifts, we were reeling in the kite and kite lines, and as we were bringing the lines in, a sailfish was following the baits back to the boat. He lit up and seemed like he was going to eat, but eventually turned off and swam away.

Overall the fishing is definitely starting to improve, and should only continue to get better. The kingfish bite should really turn on real soon, and sailfishing is right around the corner.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
