Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
October 3, 2000
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

If one word can describe the fishing last it week, it would be variable. The only consistent action we have had is a pretty good kingfish bite in the morning. Some days the kings bit all day, but they have been more consistent in the early morning. Most of the kingfish we caught were less than 15 pounds, and I haven't really heard of anybody catching any really big kingfish.

The sailfish action has been highly inconsistent. Although it is still a bit early, one day we would catch a sailfish and hear of a couple of other boats doing the same, and the next day the radio would be quiet.

Dolphin fishing has been about the same. On Sunday there was a pretty good dolphin bite in 1100 ft of water. Most of the fish were on debris or grass. I heard of some fish up to 30 pounds, with most of the dolphin caught were under 10 pounds.

If the edge looks clean and is up on the reef, we have been fishing the reef and been catching kingfish, bonitas, sailfish and dolphin. The days that the edge has moved out is when you need to improvise. Sometimes it pays to fish the edge even if it is 300 -400 ft of water. The possibility for dolphin, wahoo and sailfish always exists. If the weather is calm enough, you can run offshore and look for dolphin. Either way, there seems to be enough happening as long as you pick the right plan.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
