Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
January 1, 2001
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

The first report of the New Year and it is a good one. The fishing is extremely spotty, dependent on the area you are fishing. The fishing from Haulover to the Monument Bouy is so-so. There has been a South current all week, and the blue water is really deep. Even the blue water is not that blue.

Below Fowey Light, it is a different story. The water today by Triumph looked real good. There was a slight North current, and clean blue water in to 90 ft. There were lots of flyers (flying fish) everywhere. The area looked like it should hold fish and it did.

We went 2 for 5 on sailfish, and also caught kingfish, mutton snappers and bonitas. There was action all day long. There was another boat fishing there, a good friend of mine, Joe Turner on the Absolut. He did as well if not better.

I guess the key remains the same - find blue water and a north current, and the fishing is usually pretty good. Sometimes the current and the blue edge may not be on top of the reef, it could be in 350ft of water as it was a couple of days ago, but we still managed to go 3 out 3 on sailfish and a bunch of dolphin.

Kinfish are still being caught. The biggest kings seemed to be up by Gov't Cut. We caught a couple of 30 pounders up there during the week. The kings down south seem to be smaller but more plentiful. The big bomber bonita have also shown up again, and are a blast on light tackle.

I'm giving a seminar on kite fishing and sailfishing at the Miami Sportfishing Club this Thursday (1/4/01). If you are interested in attending, give me a call at (954) 805-8231.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
