Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
January 7, 2001
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

1/7/01

For most of last week we have had a South current and green water. Not the ideal circumstances for sailfishing, but we still have managed to catch 2 - 3 sailfish per day. On Thursday the wind picked up from the NW to at least 25 mph. Although the land shelters a NW wind, the seas did get bumpy. We caught three sailfish, all off of goggle eyes on the kite baits. The previous day, we had 10 -15 mph winds and we caught 3 sailfish all on threadfin herring on flatlines. The last fish we caught, we caught on 12 lb line. Yesterday, we finally got some blue water and a slight North current, and we caught 2 sailfish on goggle eyes on the kites, and one on a pilchard on a flatline. I guess what I am getting at, is try a variety of baits, until you see a pattern emerging. That pattern may change day to day, but if you see or hear most of the sailfish caught on herring, then put some herring out.

Dolphin fishing still remains very good. The kingfish have been biting fairly decent early in the morning. We have caught kingfish every day this week. The same pattern as last week still holds, the smaller kingfish seem to be down south, while most of the bigger kings have been caught north of Gov't Cut. I did hear of one wahoo caught yesterday, but on the whole, not many wahoo have been caught.

There have been a lot of artic bonitas about 5 - 7 miles offshore. Although not great table fare, they are a blast on light tackle. Four to eight pound test, really provides a great fight. On the same note, bonitas have been plentiful only the reef, and a big bomber bonita on light tackle can be fun.

Yesterday the blue water moved in and the current came from the North, until finally the current died and the wind died completely. This eventually slowed the fishing way down. Hopefully the blue water will stay in close along with a North current. Lets add a stiff North wind and watch out!

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
