Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
2/12/01
Fishing last week, especially earlier in the week was very good. Although we didn't fish much early during the week, news from the docks were good Boats were catching between 5 to 10 sailfish a day. As the week progressed, sailfishing remained good, and dolphin fishing got even better.
On Saturday, we had a strong East wind, which kept both the sailfish and the dolphin biting. We caught 18 dolphin and hooked three sailfish. We elected to fish in front of Miami, since the water looked a little better than the water down south. Later on during the day, the blue water moved in around Triumph Reef, and the fishing to the south improved.
With the knowledge that the blue water had moved in around the Triumph area, we fished that area on Sunday. The water definitely looked good, with a blue edge and a North current. There were also plenty of flyers (flying fish - bait). Between the color of the water, North current, baitfish and a decent wind, it looked like we were definitely going to catch some fish - and that's what we did. We stayed between Fowey and Triumph and had a pretty decent bite all day. We hooked 4 sailfish, but unfortunately only managed to catch one. We also caught dolphin, bonitas and kingfish. The kingfish in front of Fowey were so thick, that since we were strictly sailfishing and not using wire on the kite baits, we got cut off 16 times. Had we used wire, we probably would have had fewer strikes, but would have also caught a few more kingfish.
Although plenty of sailfish have been caught fishing with wire leaders, I believe you will get more sailfish bites with pure mono leaders. Wire also has a tendency to kink, and with a fish like a sailfish, which likes to get acrobatic, wire leaders tend to break. If you are looking at just catching any fish, then the wire leaders will definitely allow you to catch more of the toothy critters. The wire leaders do not need to be long; 12 inches should be more than enough.
Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
Capt. Dean Panos
