Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
February 18, 2001
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

2/18/01

The fish gods are smiling upon us, and what great timing. With the Miami Boat Show in town, a lot of charters have been booked for the many visitors here for the boat show. The good news is that both the sailfish and the tarpon have shown up in good numbers and have been biting well all week.

Sailfish has been very good all week. There has been good North current and blue water up on the reef. Both signal good sailfish conditions. We have caught at least 5 sailfish on every trip with the best day at 8. Along with the sailfish, there have been dolphin, bonitas, and a strong showing of kingfish. The sailfish were down by Fowey Light earlier during the week, but the hot bite from Friday to today has been in front of Gov't Cut. Kingfishing has been better down south of the Monument Buoy. There has also been a strong showing of wahoo. The biggest wahoo I heard caught was a 50 pounder.

For the pure sailfisherman, there have been a lot of doubles, triples and quads of being caught almost every day. I know of one boat that got 2 quads (4 sailfish at the same time) in one day. We have had a double almost every day we have fished.

Offshore the fishing has been dynamite, but inshore (tarpon) the fish has also been dynamite. After fishing offshore all day, we have been doing back to back trips with evening tarpon trips. Friday night we went 3 for 4 on tarpon, with the largest at about 110 pounds. On Saturday night, we caught 4 - 8, and the largest fish was about 70 pounds. All the tarpon have been in Gov't Cut. The boats fishing out of Haulover, have reported slower fishing.

Both tarpon fishing and sailfishing should remain on fire. The tarpon fishing will actually get better. As the winter progress into spring, the tarpon caught will be larger. Don't miss out on the action, either fish on your own boat, or book a trip with a guide!

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
