Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
July 4, 2001
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

7/2/01

East wind 15 knots, seas 3 - 5, North current, 5 sailfish bites, half a dozen dolphin, a few bonitas, a shark and a few cutoffs. Sounds like a perfect winter day in Miami. Guess again - this was yesterday off of Miami. Five sailfish in the winter is good, but in July is great. I guess the steady winds this week confused the fish a bit and got the sailfish biting. The blue water started out in 250 ft but ended up in 400 ft. The sailfish bites came right along that edge. The bites were rather aggressive. The first sail was on a goggleye on the rear kite bait. After almost spooling a TLD 20, the fish popped the leader. As we rest the baits, we put the first bait on the kite clip and were getting the second bait from the livewell. A sailfish charged the bait, which since we were still getting the lines out, was only 50 or so feet from the boat. A quick leader release when we saw another sailfish up towards the bow. We flipped out a big pilchard and within seconds had that fish hooked as well. After catching a few dolphin, we set up on another drift and this time the short kite bait with a pilchard was attacked by a sailfish. Twenty minutes, a few pictures boatside, and another release. After a few more dolphin and bonitas, the last sailfish came on a flatline pilchard, unfortunately a few jumps later he spit the hook. All things considering, not a bad day in July.

Earlier in the week, the dolphin fishing was pretty good in 800 - 1000 ft of water. Most of the dolphin were under frigate birds and the size of the fish varied from 3 - 5 pound schoolies to 20 - 25 pound pair of bull and cow dolphin.

Fishing on the edge during the afternoon has also produced kingfish, blackfin tunas and a few sailfish.

With the wind forecasting to lie down, we will be back in the Bahamas again.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
