Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
August 10, 2001
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

8/10/01

The fishing for dolphin offshore has slowed a bit this week, although it did pick up a little bit today. The dolphin have been under floaters for the most part, and not every floater has had fish. They have been scattered from 12 – 20 miles offshore.

The fishing on the edge though has picked up. On Thursday, a nice blue water edge pushed in around the Monument Buoy. The blue water pushed in to about 125 ft. The farther north you went, the farther out the blue water pushed out. By Haulover, the blue water had moved out past 400 ft. Along this edge we picked up our biggest Wahoo of the year. Weighed in on the scale at Keystone Point Marina, this brute weighed 62 pounds (Check out the pictures on the Website – Photo Page www.doubledcharters.com). The Wahoo ate a flatline pilchard along that beautiful edge. This fish made a smoking first run on a Shimano Baitrunner, which almost got spooled. We pulled in the sea anchor and not having enough time to pull in the other lines, we gave chase to this fish. After about 20 minutes, we got the fish next to the boat. As we got him close enough for the gaff, the hook pulled, as I gaffed him. A series of high fives gave way to a few minutes of astonishment, as this was truly a big fish that almost got away. We also saw but failed to hook 3 sailfish that day. Two of the three sails were in our baits, but wouldn’t eat. The goggle eyes we had as bait were frantic as the sailfish approached, literally jumping out of the water, as the sailfish would turn on them. For whatever reason though, on both occasions, each sailfish failed to get his prey.

Fishing on the edge has produced lots of bonitos, a fair amount of kingfish, with some kings in around 30 pounds, some dolphin, Wahoo, and sharks. Tomorrow we are off to Bimini again, and look forward to some exciting fishing!

Tight Lines,

Capt. Dean Panos
