Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

09/02/02

Last week we had three swordfish trips, and we got swordfish on every trip. The first night we went 1 for 2, and the swordfish we got, we were able to bait him on the surface and watch him take the bait (Cool Stuff). During the middle of the week I had a special trip with two ladies. One lady was 77 years old (Nora from Costa Rica). She had caught all sorts of marlin and sailfish, and had many other incredible catches. She had been fishing most of her life, but had never caught a swordfish. The other woman angler was Pam from Miami, and she also had caught an impressive number of fish, including many world records, but had never caught a swordfish. The pressure was on and luck was with us that night. Not that both these women could not have handled a big sword, for there is no doubt in my mind that they are both capable of catching anything, but they were hoping for smaller swordfish, and not anything incredible huge. Luck was with us that night as we caught 2 out of 2 swordfish that we hooked. While we were hooked up to our second fish, we were reeling up the other baits, when another swordfish followed up the baits. Unfortunately there was too much going on (getting the angler in the harness, reeling in the lines, and getting the boat going) that we didn’t have adequate time to bait him properly, nor did I want to take the risk of messing up the angler already on the rod. It was still pretty neat to watch this fish up close. The last night (Sunday) we went 1 for 3 and had a few more cutoffs, that were most probably sharks, since there were quite a few around that evening. What is obvious though, is the recent popularity of swordfishing, as could be seen from the number of boats fishing during the weekend. On Sunday night, I counted over 30 boats swordfishing off of Miami.

Haven’t fished much during the day, but the reports have been of consistent kingfish and steady improvements in the dolphin fishing. There were more dolphin caught this past weekend, than probably the entire month of August. Most of the dolphin were on the reef, which meant you didn’t have to go searching the Gulfstream for them.

So it seems that fishing on the edge has been productive and nighttime swordfishing for us has also been productive. Although you can swordfish year round, the summer months are dwindling and the comfort of calm seas and warm nights will become rarer. Don’t miss out on this fishery. If swordfishing sounds interesting to you, give us a call, and lets set up a trip.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
