Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

September 25, 2002
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

09/25/02

The sailfishing off of Miami continues to be real good, especially for September. We have managed to catch anywhere from 1 to 4 sailfish per trip, except for Sunday, when we went 0-2 on the sails. On Saturday, we went 3-3 on the sails, and had sailfish behind the boat, eating our live chum. At one point, as we were chumming live pilchards, we had a sailfish tearing up the freebies. I had a young boy on board (3rd grade). He quickly got to a rod, pitched out a bait with a hook in it, and within seconds was hooked up. The look of joy on his face, as well as his dad’s was priceless.

Besides sailfish, there have been a few blackfin tuna in the mix. We caught one a few days ago that went 28 pounds. The other blackfins were smaller (between 10 –20 pounds). We are also getting into that time of the fall that the kingfish should start coming through. There has already been a sign of that, as we have caught a few small kings and have gotten cut off, or baits clipped by quite a few more. The kingfish during the fall run are not normally as big as the spring kings, but there could be quite a few of them. This time last year, the kingfish were out deeper than usual. We were catching them out to 220 ft, so if you strike out in the traditional kingfish depths, give the deeper water a shot.

Wahoo fishing continued to be decent, with quite a few boats bringing in 20 – 40 pound wahoo. Not many boats have been swordfishing, but we will be out this weekend, so hopefully we will have a few good stories to tell.

Sounds like fall fishing is starting, and with the good run of sails we have already had this September, it should only get better!

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
