Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

11/06/02

The fishing on the edge should start improving as more cold fronts start coming through. As of yesterday we had great clean blue water with a strong North current. Optimum conditions for fishing on the edge. Sailfishing should start improving. There have been some sailfish caught, mostly in the afternoons, but soon enough we should start seeing these fish show up off of Miami. That was obvious the thought on everyone’s mind yesterday as you saw many sportfisherman and openfisherman flying their kites and working the edge. It’s quite the sight to see pods of sailfish pushing south with the cold fronts. As the boats line up on the edge, you can see the northern most boat hook up, followed by the next boat and continuing down the line. Getting in on the action is exciting and soon we will be in the thick of some great sailfish action.

There have also been a few dolphin caught, but they have been on the small side. Kingfishing has been hit or miss.

Swordfishing remains strong. Last night we went 1 for 4. The fish we caught was a feisty one that fought hard for 40 minutes. It was 56 inches (LWJF) and weighed 90 pounds. We missed the first two bites as we were setting out our lines. The jugs and weight s came off as drag was pulling hard, but we weren’t able to keep the hook in them. We then missed another fish on the tip rod. I watched the rod bend over quite a few times, obviously from him batting the bait with his huge sword, but never did get a hook stuck. The last bite we got was on the tip rod again. This time the hook struck its mark. At first the fish came up easy, but as soon as we got it close to the boat, it peeled 100 yards of line of quick. After about 40 minutes we were able to get this fish. The trip before last night, we caught two swordfish, both about 100 pounds. The action should continue and hopefully so, since I have a swordfish trip every night next week.

I’ll be doing a swordfishing seminar at the Miami Sportfishing Club on Thursday, Nov 7th. on swordfishing. Stop by. For more info, give me a call.
