Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

11/13/02
Fishing is steadily improving along the coast of Miami, with the exception of swordfishing, which remains OUTSTANDING!
Sailfish made a brief showing along the week and during the weekend. Not a lot of sails were caught, but if you were in the right place at the right time, you could manage to catch 2 or 3 sailfish in the day. Kingfish also were around, with our biggest kingfish last week at 30 pounds. Some bottom fish (mostly muttons) were also being caught, as were a few dolphin. With the rapidly approaching cold fronts, winter fish, which can be spectacular in Miami, will be in full swing.
Swordfishing is already in full swing and seems to be getting better. In the last three swordfish trips we have caught 11 swordfish, out of 14 that we hooked. Last Friday we landed 4 out of 5 swords, with the largest at 120 pounds, and the rest between 60 – 80 pounds. We missed the first fish at around 8:00pm and waited almost two hours until the next one. Once it got rolling though, we had fish on almost the entire time. On Monday we had another sword trip and landed 2 out of three. The largest was 65 pounds, and then we released a smaller one towards the end of the trip. Last night was phenomenal, as we caught 5 out 6 swordfish, with the largest at 170 pounds. This big fish fought for 2 hours and 5 minutes. We had him up towards the surface and actually touch the leader after an hour. Being that close we felt good that we would get him soon. That though was not what he had on his mind, as he stripped off 500 ft of line instantly. We were back in it for another hour and 5 minutes, until we had him boatside again. This time though we got him. We caught three other fish in the 50 – 80 pound class, and one smaller. Catching 5 out of 6 swordfish in a single evening is simply World Class Fishing!
If you would like to experience the thrill of catching a billfish, either a sailfish or the mighty swordfish, give me a call, and lets set up a trip.
