Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
November 25, 2002
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

11/25/02

Winter fishing is ON. The sailfish have shown up in Miami, and we have been catching anywhere from 2 – 4 fish per trip. On some of the days that we didn’t fish, some boats caught 6 – 8 sailfish per trip. As every cold front approaches, the sailfishing will steadily get better. We are in the early part of the sailfish season, and it will last well into April. Some of the best early season sailfishing can be found right in front of Miami. Last November – December, as well as the year before that, saw an excellent sailfish bite in Miami.

Kingfish have also been around in good numbers. This past weekend, just south of Government Cut, there were plenty of small kingfish, with an occasional 20 – 30 pounder thrown in the mix.

Dolphin on the edge have also been productive, we caught some dolphin yesterday with the largest at 20 pounds. Wahoo have also made a surprise showing this past week. There have been quite a few wahoo caught of Miami. No special tactics were used, just boats live baiting on the edge or the kingfish boats live chumming have been catching a few wahoo per trip.

As the cold fronts approach and sailfishing gets hot, swordfishing has also been good, on the nights you can get out. As the cold fronts come, the winds switch out of the NW, N, or NE, which kicks up the Gulfstream quite a bit. The key to swordfishing in the winter is flexibility. I had to cancel 4 swordfish trips this past week, due to weather, but all of them are being rescheduled, as we get a night or two of decent conditions. Our last trip swordfishing was excellent. We ended up catching 5 out of 6 swords, with a few of them over 120 pounds. We just rescheduled a trip that was scheduled for tonight, and I am chomping at the bit to get out swordfishing again.

So no excuses, the fishing has been good. If you would like to experience the thrill of catching a billfish, either a sailfish or the mighty swordfish, give me a call, and lets set up a trip.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
