Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
December 8, 2002
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

12/08/02

Depending upon where you are fishing, will dictate what you will be catching.

The fishing in front of Miami has been producing mostly kingfish. The water has been pretty green, which kingfish love, but not optimum for sailfish. Along with the kingfish, have been a few dolphin, some muttons and earlier in the week, quite a few bonitas.

Once you get below Fowey Light, the conditions change rapidly. A blue water edge pushes in relatively shallow, and on that edge is were everyone has been finding sailfish. Last week and again this week we have had 3 out of 5 sails in a day fishing down in this area. The key is finding that blue crisp water and a North current. Our sailfish have been mixed both on the kites and the flatlines. Threadfin herring and goggle eyes seemed to have been the best baits. Dolphin fishing has also been pretty good down there as well. There has been a current edge that meanders in and out from 300ft to 100ft in depth. Usually while we are drifting and come across this edge, we have caught dolphin. Kingfishing to the south has not been as good as it is up in front of Miami.

Swordfishing on the other hand remains a mystery. I say mystery because I have not been swordfishing in over 2 weeks. I have had to reschedule 7 swordfish trips this past few weeks due to weather. It is no fun fishing in 10 ft seas, 20 miles from shore at night. Since most of the swordfish charters have been local clients, it is easy to reschedule for a calmer night (if that may ever come this winter). Although the conditions have been perfectly fishable on the reef for sails, dolphin, etc., as the wind comes from the north and goes against the North current in the Gulfstream, waves on the reef may only be 3 ft, but will be 10 ft plus in the Gulfstream where we are doing our swordfishing. Our night will come, and I’m sure the swording will be excellent – Can’t wait.

Holidays are around the corner, and if you can’t find that perfect gift for the fisherman or fisherwoman, consider giving them a charter as a gift. We have gift certificates available.

Also fishing around the holidays is a busy few weeks, so if you have relatives coming into town, or would like to go fishing during the holidays, give us a call now, as many of the days are already booked.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
