Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
March 14, 2004
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Double D Charters

3/14/04

Last week we managed to get in a few day trips and a few night trips. The day trips were all about sailfish. We caught anywhere from 2 to 5 sailfish during each trip and had plenty of action with bonitas, a few kingfish and a few dolphin. There have been some dolphin on the edge this past week. We caught one about 25 pounds and heard of a few in the 30 pound class. Most of the action has been between the Miami Sea Buoy and Fowey Light. Last week we had great looking water. It was a deep blue in color and had a strong North Current. I didn’t fish yesterday, but reports were that the current was slowing down a bit.

We had swordfish trips booked for every night last week, but due to weather, we only got to go one 2 of them, and on one of them we had to return after only two hours. That leaves us with one full sword trip, but that one was quite a trip. I fished with a very good customer of mine who had swordfished with me a few times and had success each time. We were hoping for more continued good luck. After about an hour of setting up, the long jug bait goes off and FISH ON! A short fight later we get a 50-inch (lower jaw to fork of the tail) fish to the boat. As we continue our drift and we are resetting some lines out, the long jug goes off again and this time we get a nice 110 pounder to the boat. Resetting again, I am setting out the middle jug when the jug pops off and we get another fish on and 30 minutes later we get another 100 pounder. The flurry continues, we missed one, then caught a small 35 pound swordfish, which we tagged and watched him swim away. It is now only 9:00pm and we have already caught 4 out of 5 swordfish. We give it another hour and the front tip rod goes off. Fish came flying to the surface; his bill was slashing the air as he jumped clear out of the water. We got a legitimate leader release on that one and at 10:30pm we called it a night catching 5 out of 6 swordfish. Quite the night with a great group of guys.

We are now in probably the best 3 months of the year to fish. March, April and May are great for sailfishing, kingfish, blackfin tunas and dolphin will soon show up. Nighttime swordfishing and tarpon fishing is superb as well. Don’t miss out – we have a few day trips open in the next few weeks, so give me a call and lets go fishing!

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
