Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
March 23, 2004
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Double D Charters

3/22/04

The saying goes “March in like a lion, and out like a lamb”, but it should say March in like a lion and out like a lion. It has been windy to say the least. We had all of our swordfish trips cancelled last week, and the same looks to l=be likely this week. Even with the wind though, we have managed a couple of day trips and we converted some of the swordfish trips to tarpon trips as well.

The day fishing has been pretty good when we have gotten out and reports from the rest of the fleet have been good as well. Sailfish have been the primary targets and they have not disappointed us on any of our trips. We have been catching anywhere from 2 to 4 fish a trip, and have been getting 4 to 6 shots a day at them. They have been on the edge that was sitting a bit deeper last week (150 – 180 ft of water). Kingfishing has shown some signs of brilliance. There have been days that the kings have been biting fairly decent, but then a day or so later, they have been scarce. While live baiting on the edge, there have been quite a few dolphin around, mostly schoolies, but I did hear of a few 20 – 30 pound fish last week. Another fish that was fairly common last week was cobia. There were quite a few cobia caught while live baiting and also a few caught under turtles. Cobia like to follow turtles and rays, so when you see one, it is beneficial to cast a live bait in the turtles vicinity. If there is a cobia around, he will like go after the live bait. Another pleasant surprise has been the arrival of the first few blackfin tunas. They have been caught kite fishing and soon will increase in numbers.

As mentioned earlier, due to windy weather, we converted most of our swordfish trips to tarpon trips, and the tarpon cooperated on all of our trips. Average size was around 75 pounds with the biggest one we caught right around 120 pounds.

Next month not only will the winds calm down a little bit, but the fishing will be about as good as it gets in South Florida. April and may can be phenomenal with sailfish, tunas, kingfish, dolphin, as well as nighttime fishing for tarpon and swordfish. Don’t hesitate; book your trips now for the next few months.
