Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

4/5/04

For the past week or so, the sailfishing has slowed down quite a bit. As evident in the Miami Billfish Tournament where over 100 boats caught right around 150 sailfish in three days of fishing. Usually in that tournament, they catch 150 sailfish a day. Either way it was slow sailfishing, but a big congrats to all the winners including a good friend of mine, Matty on the Down and Dirty for winning it.

The water in Miami looks good, but is lacking decent current. As soon as the current gets dialed in, the sailfishing should pick right back up. While the sailfishing has been slow, we have been concentrating on catching kingfish and have been doing some wreck fishing as well. The kingfish are making a stronger showing each day, and we have had some decent days catching kings.

Besides the kings showing up for spring, the first signs of blackfin tuna are also appearing. A few blackfins were caught last week by the fleet, and a few more were caught this past weekend, including one that we caught yesterday. The big push hasn’t come through yet, but they are right on track.

Last week, we also had phenomenal swordfish action. We went Monday night, Tuesday night and Wednesday night and caught fish every night. The first night we caught two out of three. The second night was nothing short of incredible. We ended up catching 5 out 6 swordfish including one well over 200 pounds. The third night we came close to sustaining our numbers and caught 4 out of 5 swordfish. That’s comes out to 11 swordfish caught, 14 swordfish hooked, in only three nights of fishing. The first night we only fished for a few hours as the seas were a bit on the rough side. Everyone knows how much I love swordfishing and it is nights like this that keep me coming out.

So although the sailfish is slow now, it is bound to pick up and the spring action off of Miami can be phenomenal. Give us a call and lets set up that next trip!

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
