Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
April 18, 2004
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

4/17/04

You never realize how important current is, until you don’t have any. During the week, we had decent North current. As should be, we benefited with some decent fishing. We caught sailfish on every trip that we found North current and even caught a sailfish on a day where we didn’t have any current. We also had a few trips that we did really well with dolphin on the edge. We caught 11 one day and close to that the day before. Those dolphin were caught primarily on the kite baits. We had a few fish pushing the high 20 pound range and quite a few in the teens. The dolphin fishing was so good on Thursday we couldn’t get the 2nd kite out for a few hours. The dolphin were hitting the live baits as we were setting up the first kite. There haven’t been as many kingfish around as there were last week, but we have seen a steady stream of blackfin tunas. We caught one this week, and many of the other boats had one or two as well. The big numbers for the tunas aren’t in yet, but we are definitely seeing signs of that. We have also seen a big increase in sharks that are roaming the edge. Quite a few hammerhead sharks have been around along with some threshers. Yesterday and today, the current died off completely and the fishing was rather tough. We caught a sailfish yesterday and mostly bonitas and a cero mackerel today. I am sure that once the current picks back up, the fishing will get real good.

The nighttime fishery hasn’t been too bad. We went tarpon fishing two nights. One night we caught 2 tarpon the first night and the other night we caught one. The good news was that all three fish were at 100 pounds or better. The wind has kept us in from the swording grounds for all but one night. The night we did get out, we caught three very decent swords. The biggest one was over 150 pounds, and the rest were close to that size. We were also done by 10:00pm. Not a bad night!

So whether it is sailfish, kingfish, dolphin or tunas during the day, or swordfish at night, give us a call and lets go get em!

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
